Carl C. Cole - Ward 8
Carl C. Cole is a native of Washington, DC and an arts champion. Carl has served on numerous boards and commissions during several mayoral appointments, including Board of Directors, Anacostia Waterfront Corp., where he served as chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee, the Comprehensive Task Force Planning Group, and the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) to the Executive Council of the Chesapeake Bay Program. He previously served as vice chair of the Arts Commission. He is an amateur colorist and an avid photographer—disciplines he embraced at an early age. In 2008, he was co-creator, along with DC Poet Laureate Delores Kendrick and Capt. Duncan Hood of the Poetry Afloat program. Cole is an active member of Foto Craft (formerly the 12th Street Colored YMCA camera club). His passion, though, is not limited to the visual arts. He is often seen around town at various theaters and he and his wife (Rise“) are champions of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts dance department and avid opera lovers.
On May 7, 2007, he received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and later that year he was honored by the Council of the District of Columbia. He is a founding member of the Organization for Anacostia Rowing and Sculling, which gave rise to the Anacostia Community Boat House organization.
Cole is also a respected sailor with over 35 years experience aboard tall ships. In the 1980s and 1990s, he and other members of the Potomac River Pilots Association were the operators of the City’s tug “the Jim Purce.”
He resides with his wife, Rise Brown Cole, in the community of Fairlawn in Southeast.
