MaryAnn Miller has had a lifelong commitment to public service. She began as an art teacher/supervisor in the New York City school system. In addition to classroom instruction, she devoted many of her summers, weekends and after school hours mentoring young students in support of their artistic interests and talents. Miller moved to Washington, DC in 1977 to work for President Carter’s Administration and served as a special assistant to the Director of ACTION which was comprised of the Peace Corps, VISTA and the Older Americans Programs.
In the years following, she was the administrative assistant to Congressman Robert Garcia who represented the South Bronx, NY, and later served as a special assistant to the first secretary of the US Department of Education. She helped to organize a nationwide student art exhibit for the Inauguration of the new Department of Education. For the next 27 years, Miller worked in the District of Columbia government as the deputy director for Policy, Planning and Legislative Affairs at the Department of Employment Services; the deputy director in the Mayor’s Office of Policy and Evaluation; and as the executive director of Serve, DC (the DC Commission on National and Community Service).
After a distinguished career in District government, Miller returned to studying painting and has exhibited in local art shows. She studied painting at Hofstra University, Pratt Institute, Art Students League, The New School for Social Research and the University of the District of Columbia. She currently volunteers in many capacities in her continuing commitment to serve the residents of the District of Columbia.
