Advanced Emergency Medical Technican Certification

Initial certification (Received certification training at a District training center)

The Department of Health has instituted a new online application for providers seeking initial certification in the District. You will receive an e-mail from your sponsoring agency that provides access to the system.

  • Copy of Course Completion Certificate
  • Copy of NREMT AEMT (or greater) Certification
  • Copy of AHA Health Care Provider CPR Certification (or equivalent)
  • Completed application signed by the Medical Director

Out of State (You are currently certified in another state and seeking DC certification)

  • Copy of current State Certificate or License
  • Copy of NREMT AEMT (or greater) Certification
  • Copy of AHA Health Care Provider CPR Certification (or equivalent)
  • Completed ALS Certification Verification form (Available as a download below)
  • Military personnel who do not have a state card should submit a copy of their DD-214 form and a completed ALS Certification Military Verification form (Available as a download below)
  • Completed application signed by the Medical Director

Renewal of DC Certification (You are currently certified in DC but 45 days till lapse)

  • Copy of current DC Certificate
  • Copy of NREMT AEMT (or greater) Certification
  • Copy of AHA Health Care Provider CPR Certification (or equivalent)
  • Completed application signed by the Medical Director

Reinstatement of DC Certification (previously certified in DC, but certification has lapsed)

  • Copy of NREMT AEMT (or greater) Certification
  • Copy of AHA Health Care Provider CPR Certification (or equivalent)
  • Completed application signed by the Medical Director

NEW - Check the Status of a District of Columbia EMS Provider Certification

The EMS Division of the Department of Health maintains a list of individuals who have gained and maintained status as a District Certified Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT, EMT-Intermediate, and/or Paramedic. To determine if an individual possesses a District certification, you can choose to search by last name or District certification number.

Note: Search results will return a list of names of individuals who possess District certification at one of the levels indicated above. Individuals using the search page should verify the search results and the current certification status by contacting the EMS Office at (202) 671-4222 or (202) 671-0690 for confirmation.
