Massage Therapy Licensing

The Board of Massage Therapy regulates the practice of massage therapy, including licensing massage therapists. The Board advises the Mayor, evaluates applicants' qualifications, and recommends standards and procedures. The Board also issues licenses, receives and reviews complaints, requests investigations, conducts hearings, and issues an annual report. Members must file personal financial disclosure statements. The Board consists of five members appointed by the Mayor: four massage therapists licensed in the District and one consumer member. Licenses expire on December 31 of odd years.

 

Renewal Notice:

The DC Board of Massage Therapy 2013 licensure renewal cycle began on November 1, 2012.  As you know, the renewal process this year includes a new statutory license requirement, enacted by the D.C. City Council, which requires all licensees to undergo a criminal back ground check (CBC) and be fingerprinted. 

Because of the new CBC requirement, it has been determined that the remaining week will not allow sufficient time for the all massage therapy licensees to renew their licenses by January 31, 2013.  Accordingly, the renewal period will be extended until March 31, 2013, pursuant to 17 DCMR 4006.  All licensees may continue to work with their current license as long as they have submitted a renewal application to the Board by January 31, 2013 and are pending approval.  Please note that a licensee who fails to submit his or her renewal application by January 31, 2013 will be required to pay a late fee of $85.00.

An applicant for renewal must complete a minimum twelve (12) continuing education units (CEUs) during the period 2/1/2011 and 1/31/2013.  Continuing education must include a total of twelve (12) hours of approved continuing education, of which three (3) hours must be in Ethics and Nine (9) hours must be in massage-related course through a Board-approved provider. Of these nine (9) hours, six (6) hours must be face to face instruction and three hours may be online instruction.

This requirement does not apply to applicants for the first renewal of a license. If you are renewing for the first time, answer yes to the question pertaining to CE.  Refer to DC Municipal Regulations for Massage Therapy on the Board of Massage Therapy website for additional information regarding continuing education. NOTE: A CE audit will be conducted immediately following the renewal period.  Indicating that you completed the required continuing education hours if you have not, subjects you to disciplinary action.
