Produce Plus is a locally-funded farmers’ market incentive program designed to increase access to healthy and nutritious food options for income-eligible District residents, as well as, to promote the presence and benefits of Farmers’ Markets, with the ultimate goal of improving public health outcomes. While we cannot speak officially on how the Program was conceived, this is a model utilized by other jurisdictions. The District’s Produce Plus Program, however, is the only one that incentivizes not only Supplemental Nutritional Aid Program (SNAP) recipients, but also Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and Supplemental Security Income recipients as well.
DC residents that participate in the following programs, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, (WIC), Commodity Supplemental Foods, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, (TANF), Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income(SSI) and Medicaid are eligible to receive 2 (two) $5.00 checks once per day per market visit. The checks are issued per household and participants need only produce a valid District photo identification and proof of Program participation. This year’s Program began on June 1st through September 30th.
