Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration (APRA)

The Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration (APRA) is the Single State Authority (SSA) for substance abuse services for the District of Columbia. APRA regulates and sets policy for substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery services. It is also the major purchaser of substance abuse services for District residents without insurance.

Mission:

To ensure a continuum of quality substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery support services for District residents and families coping with the disease of addiction or who are at risk of becoming addicted to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Summary of Services:

To effectively address substance abuse in the District of Columbia, the Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration (“APRA”) promotes access to a continuum of quality substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery support services.

Prevention includes reducing factors that inrease the risk of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and abuse among children and youth, as well as promoting the likelihood of healthy, drug-free youth and their families.

Treatment includes assessment and referrals for appropriate levels of substance abuse treatment including outpatient, intensive outpatient, residential, detoxification and stabilization, and medication assisted therapy.

Recovery Support includes wrap-around services, such as care coordination, mentoring, coaching, educational support, job readiness and training, public transportation and other services to support recovery.
