DC POST Board (Police Officers Standards and Training Board)
The District of Columbia Police Officers Standards and Training Board (the POST Board or the Board) was created by the Omnibus Public Safety Agency Reform Amendment Act of 2000 to bring consistency and continuity and to enhance the quality of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) sworn officer selection and training programs. The statutory authority for the D.C. POST Board, contained in D.C. Official Code § 5-107.03 and § 5-107.04, was amended by the D.C. Council in 2004 to extend the authority of the Board to the selection and training of D.C. Housing Authority Police Department (DCHAPD) sworn officers. The code was again modified in 2012; the modifications clarified the roles and duties of the Board as well as provided the Chief of Police with more discretionary powers.
The POST Board consists of 11 voting members including the Mayor or a designee; representatives from the Washington D.C. Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia; the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD); the District of Columbia Police Union, the District of Columbia Superior Court; the Office of the District of Columbia Attorney General, the criminal justice education community, and the District of Columbia community at large. Representatives of the MPD Reserve Officer (volunteer) Corps, the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions and the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice serve as non-voting advisory members.
The mission of the D.C. Police Officers Standards and Training Board is to set the minimum standards for training and to enhance the delivery of law enforcement service in the District of Columbia by ensuring the use of best practices in police officer selection and training standards for the Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Housing Authority.
