EMS Provider Certification

All EMS providers in the District must be currently certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), and they must maintain NREMT certification to maintain District Certification. Additionally, all District EMS providers must be sponsored by a certified District EMS response organization or educational institution. The application must be signed by the Medical Director of the sponsoring institution, verifying your sponsorship by the organization
The Application Process
The following must be submitted, along with the appropriate application, to the EMS Division of the Department of Health to be considered for certification as a DC EMS Provider. You must also submit the proper fee as indicated on the application.
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

Initial DC Certification (Received certification training at a District educational institution)
- Copy of Course Completion Certificate
- Copy of NREMT EMR (or greater) Certification
- Copy of American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider CPR Certification (or equivalent)
- Completed application signed by the Medical Director
Out of State (You are currently certified in another state and seeking DC certification)
- Copy of current State Certificate or License
- Copy of NREMT EMR (or greater) Certification
- Copy of AHA Health Care Provider CPR Certification (or equivalent)
- Completed BLS Certification Verification form [PDF]
- Military personnel who do not have a state card should submit a copy of their DD-214 form and a completed BLS Certification Military Verification form [PDF]
- Completed application signed by the Medical Director
Renewal of DC Certification (You are currently certified in DC but 45 days till lapse)
- Copy of current DC Certificate
