DC residents eat healthy

Good Nutrition is for Everyone!

The Department of Health offers a number of programs to help DC residents to choose and get the foods they need to be healthy. These programs include the following:

  • Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) – Provides food and nutrition support services to pregnant women, new mothers (breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding), infants, and children.
  • Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) – Provides nutrition education and foods for low-income pregnant, postpartum, and lactating women; preschool-age children; and DC residents 60 years old or older.
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) – Develops and implements community-based nutrition education programs for families with young children, youth, the elderly, and individuals with special needs who receive or are eligible to receive

Key tips for improving your nutrition:

  • Make half your plate fruits and veggies.
  • Make at least half your grains whole.
  • Switch to skim or 1% milk.
  • Vary your protein food choices.

Food and Nutrition Resources

  • MyPlate: A tool to show consumers the recommended portion for each food group.  The plate is split into four sections, each representing a different food group (protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables). A circle shape next to the plate represents dairy products, especially milk. Viewing the icon online allows consumers to click on each section of the plate for more information.
  • MoreMatters: A site providing information on how to include more fruits and veggies of all types in your diet.  Every step taken towards eating more fruits and veggies helps you and your family be at their best, because eating fruits and vegetables may reduce your family’s risk of many diseases.
  • Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating more fruits and vegetables than any other food group.
